In case you were wondering why we had to go through the Eurodance-pop movement in the 1990’s, it’s because without it, EDM wouldn’t exist today. If you think about it, the intention was the same (have people dance and let loose in the club, just have fun and forget your problems) and the beats and electronized voice just needed a bit of modernising. That’s why the Vengaboys get my full attention in this week’s Flashback Friday with a single that represents Eurodance at its peak.
Vengaboys’ “Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!” was released in 1999 and reached the top of the charts in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, New Zealand and Belgium. The Dutch pop group attracted fans with their simple yet catchy lyrics: “I want you in my room, let’s spend the night together, together in my room” and made a brand out of cheesy party anthems.
Although critics never gave them much credit, the Vengaboys did achieve a few successes with The Party Album! with songs like “We like to Party” (which became their biggest hit after being used in a Six Flags commercial) and “We’re going to Ibiza” before “Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!” was released, even though let’s admit it, they all sound the same.
Believe it or not, the group is still together (and covered in latex!) and are still performing live for nostalgic 20somethings. They toured and sold out nine shows in Australia in 2012 and have three upcoming shows in Europe this spring.
In an effort to stay current (because “you can’t get stuck in the 90’s forever” a member said), the group came back with a new single in 2010 called “Rocket to Uranus”, a collaboration with celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton, but I have yet to hear it on the radio -- or anywhere else for that matter. However a 3D music video is out on YouTube.
Call it worst or best summer hit, there’s no doubt Vengaboys made a splash with "Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!"
And now for your viewing pleasure (worth watching if only for the outfits)...
