The Met Gala, formally called the Costume Institute Gala is an annual fundraising event for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York City. The benefit serves an opening celebration for the Institute's annual fashion exhibit. Once the fundraising event has ended, the fashion exhibit runs for several months. Each year the gala has a themed event, which many A-list celebrities that attend where exclusive and exquisite designs based on the theme of that year.
The Met Gala started in 1946 where it attracted the personalities from the arts, fashion, high-society, film and music. The Met has been considered to be the fashion industry's premier annual red carpet event. It's red carpet fashions are highly photographed world wide, critiqued, reviewed and emulated. The Gala is regarded as one of the most exclusive social events in New York and over the past years have raised a substantial amount of money including $12 million in 2012 and nine million dollars in 2013.
Anna Wintour, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue and the Chair of the Met Gala since 1995, overseas both the benefit committee and the guest list with Vogue staffers helping to assist the list of invitees. The annual guest list includes only 650-700 people.
In 2014 individual tickets cost $25,000, for those who were not listed on the guest list, which apparently the price was raised $10,000 more than the year before to increase the exclusivity of the event.
The Met Gala starts off with a cocktail hour and a formal dinner. Overall this is a pretty extravagant event that definitely has people talking at the end. Can't wait for next year's Met Gala, I'm sure it will be just as amazing and lavish as the years before.
