Just searching "tipping" on Google results in several articles with titles like- "Why you should stop tipping," "Fuck you if you don't tip your server," "Reasons tipping is important," and "Screw tipping."
Tipping has clearly always been a controversial topic and not for the reasons you'd expect. Frustration related to tipping comes from both sides- the ones expecting a tip and the ones expected to give one. In the same way, frustration related to tipping is not just a trend among people who cannot afford to tip. Tipping frustrates the rich and elite equally as much, but why?
One reason is that in some incidences, people who are known for having a lot of money were reported to have being victimized by servers changing the number in the tip spot on their receipt in order to get more money. This typically happens when the restaurant guest has a few too many drinks and doesn't realize what's going on.
For example, a waitress in New Jersey was arrested for changing tip amounts on credit card bills. This is only one case of a not so rare issue.
While this might turn several people off to tipping, it shouldn't change who you are as a person.
Tipping is a reflection of your character, so our advice is to continue to tip and tip well if the sever deserves it. Always go above and beyond- not just with tipping, but with everything you do in life (especially if you have the means to)! There is no reason you should change your generosity because someone took advantage of it.
